The most popular baby names for boys and girls
The most popular baby names of 2016 have been revealed – and the results might surprise you. According to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Wednesday (September 20), Olivia was the most popular first name given to baby girls in Surrey in 2016, replacing Amelia. Oliver remained the most popular name for baby boys born in 2016, having held the top spot since 2013. The name Daniel is not as popular anymore, according to getsurrey.co.uk.
Olivia had managed to just make it to the top of the list of most popular baby names in the county in 2014, but Amelia was back on top in 2015. However, in 2016 Olivia rose back to first place in Surrey and across the south east. Other popular girls names include Isla, Emily, Ava, Jessica, Poppy, Isabella, Lily and Sophia.
Oliver remains as the most popular first name given to baby boys in the region for the fourth year in a row.
Harry, George, Jack, Henry, Charlie, Oscar, Jacob, Noah and William also made it to the top 10 in Surrey.
Nick Stripe, from ONS, said: “With over 696,000 babies born in England and Wales in 2016, and nearly 64,000 different names chosen for them, it’s interesting how relatively stable the top 10 names have been over recent years.
„Olivia replaced Amelia as the most popular name for girls in 2016, returning to the top position it previously held between 2008 and 2010.
„Oliver remained the most popular name for baby boys born in 2016, having held the top spot since 2013.
„It is as you move down the rankings you begin to notice social and cultural changes being reflected in name choices.”
When compared with 2006, the names with the greatest increase in popularity in the top 10 in 2016 were Noah, Oscar and Muhammad.
The largest decrease was for Daniel, down 20 places in the rankings since being in the top 10 in 2006.
Of the 10 most popular girls’ names in 2016, there were four that were also in the top 10 in 2006: Olivia, Emily, Lily and Jessica. Compared with 2006, the biggest increases in popularity were Isla and Ava and the largest decrease was for Ellie.
